Hello there, I'm Genevieve. I'm originally from California, but have been living as an expat in Aberdeen, Scotland for almost a decade now with my husband. I am mostly self-trained, and have been painting and drawing since before I can remember (so my mother tells me!). When I broke my right thumb (dominant hand) as a kid, I taught myself to draw with my left hand so that I could keep on doing my art - I would have gone stir-crazy otherwise.
I work mainly in acrylic and occasionally watercolour paints, sometimes with mixed media components thrown in, though I also do drawings and some digital artwork on occasion. I love colour and the balance between colours, and am told that this is the most striking aspect of my art. I'm also partial to mixed media because of the added texture and layers that it can add to an artwork. Mostly I work in a realistic style, although I do like to mix in some abstract components to keep things interesting. I'm inspired by a lot of things, but mostly the natural world around me and its fantastic colour palette. I also love reading mythologies and folktales, am drawn to the mysterious and supernatural, am a child of the '80s, and listen to a variety of music almost constantly, so these influences sometimes creep into my work as well.
I've also recently earned a PhD in Psychology - as you can probably see, my interests are varied, and all my life I have balanced a love of the creative arts with a love of science - mainly I think because I'm just generally very curious about the world around us. My PhD thesis topic was about the state of consciousness artists enter while they are creating (flow), and I think my background in science sometimes influences my art, so each informs and enriches the other.
